Intro to Hanbuilding - 4 weeks - March - April 25

 Start time 7:00pm

This 4 week workshop is a great way to learn a few different handbuilding skills as well as an introduction to glazing.  This is perfect for beginners or those that have dabbled a little and want to refine their skills a little.

The workshop will run over 4 week nights

Week One  Wednesday 26th March 2025
Introduction to Hand Building - 2 hours
Tonight is all about the basics.   You will be introduced to the clay we will be using, it's different stages during the process,  we will look at the various techniques we will use for the next 2 practical weeks as well as make a couple of trinket/spice dishes so you get the feel of the clay.  We will also cover the drying and firing process.

Week Two  Wednesday 2nd April 2025
Make something round 2 1/2 hours approx
This week we will be making something round.  I will show you the best and easiest way to form your clay into a circle as well as the best stage to shape your mug etc.   You will also be able to add underglaze transfers or some sculptural elements to decorate your item.  Ideas for this week 2:   Mug, Vase, Utensil Holder, Tea Light Candle holder/oil burner.

Week Three  Wednesday 9th April 2025
Make something with flat sides - 2 1/2 hours approx

Tonight you will make something with flat walls.   You will be able to make one of the following:  Tea Light House, Lidded Box, Square Vase/Utensil Holder

Week Four Wednesday 30th April 2025
Glazing  approx 3 hours
This will be held 3 weeks after Week 3 (usually two weeks but have pushed out the date because of school holiday's).   In this workshop you will learn how to use underglaze and glaze and get to glaze your pieces from Week 1, 2 and 3

Clay used for these workshops is a speckled stoneware.

Price includes all materials and tools needed, firing all your items as well as glaze etc

Your finished items will be available approximately 2 weeks after the glazing workshop.

This is a small class with a maximum of 5 people.

Available for ages 15 plus

For this course if you miss a week there will be no make up days available

Please wear clothes you don't mind getting grubby, there are aprons available.   It is advisable to have reasonably short nails when working with clay.  If you do have nails we can work around it but you might find that  you need to clean up the clay a bit more (even small nails will leave marks as we make the items).

Refreshment will be provided but feel free to BYO if you would like a wee dabble during the class.

Please also be aware that due to the nature of pottery and firing x 2 means that sometimes things don't work out as they should.  I dry mugs super slowly but sometimes cracks etc still form.   It happens, it still happens to me and any potter you talk too will say the same.   I will do my utmost best and handle all your mugs with care but please be aware due to the nature of the craft there may be a breakage.   I really hope not, but sometimes it just happens.
